On Saturday, January 27, the Most Reverend Francis Leo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto visited St. John Chrysostom Parish in Newmarket.

Archbishop Leo celebrated the 5 p.m. Mass at the parish which was established in 1841. As part of his visit, His Grace also blessed the new icon of their Patron Saint, St. John Chrysostom.

Before Mass, Archbishop Leo met with the pastoral team, parish staff and those who carried the icon in procession. Those who carried the icon were representing the different parish groups from the parish: the Catholic Women’s League, Knight of Columbus, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Legion of Mary, Prayer Group and Community Bread (a local group of parishioners that feeds the hungry and poor every Monday). The blessing was done at the beginning of Mass.

After Mass, refreshments were served in the parish hall. In addition to being a time of great fellowship, this offered parishioners an opportunity to meet and greet our new Archbishop.

Many came to the Mass and it was a joyous occasion.
